Hiking

With breathtaking scenery and dense forest for miles, Lake Tahoe is America’s hiking destination. Tahoe has over 50 sanctioned trails with varying elevation, difficulty, location, and distance: plenty to keep even an avid hiker trekking indefinitely. South Lake Tahoe is a short distance from many of these great hiking spots.

Kingsbury Grade Area

Kingsbury Grade Hiking Trail AreaThe Kingsbury Grade area has several trailheads leading off into beautiful paths. The two major trails at Kingsbury is the Spooner Summit and the Heavenly Stagecoach. These two trails combine to form over 30 miles of scenic winding paths. Both offer rewards of beautiful views that cannot be seen from anywhere else: including the Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe, and the Desolation Wilderness area. Both of these trails are 100 percent complete now, and well maintained. The Spooner access is at the end of Andria Drive two miles north of SR 207. Be aware that parking at this trailhead is limited, so arranging car pools or making the walk to the trail by foot or bicycle can be a big advantage. To reach the Stagecoach which is one of the most popular hiking spots in all of Tahoe, drive to the top of Kingsbury Grade on SR 207 then turn south on Tram. Drive about 1 mile south until you reach the Heavenly Stagecoach parking lot. From this lot there are signs guiding you to the trailhead.

Heavenly Resort

Hiking Trails at Heavenly ResortThe Heavenly Resort boasts 3 great trails from the Stateline Gondola. They vary in difficulty from novice to advanced, but every one offers great views of Tahoe’s famous sugar pines and wildflowers. Hike up, and you get your ride down the gondola is free! The resort keeps the top of the mountain restaurant & bar open year-round for sightseers and hikers.

The Big Meadows trail is another local and visitor favorite. This trail is 14 miles long skirting Star Lake, a small but beautiful encapsule lake. This trail has several amenities as well, including restrooms and parking for horse trailers if you prefer to bring along your trail companion.

Tahoe Rim Trail

Hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail in South Lake TahoeThe Tahoe Rim Trail is a spectacular trail that follows the mountain ridge around the entire shore of Lake Tahoe. The trail has been maintained by a non-profit organization for the past twenty years, and they’ve done a wonderful job! To access this trail take Kingsbury Grade to Benjamin Drive, and take this until it becomes Andria Drive, which dead-ends right into the trail head.
