South shore has dozens of the best maintained biking trails in Tahoe. Biking in the area is an exhilarating and breathtaking experience, with scenic paths and a variety of skill levels offered. Of the roughly 70 miles of Tahoe shore, over 20 are designated Biking paths. For the novice riders there are level trails leading throughout the Tahoe shores, with vistas of the lake and access to many points of interest. For the advanced biker, there are countless trails winding throughout the sierras, many accessible from the Kingsbury Grade itself. For even more diversity in the biking trail system, most hiking trails also allow bikes now. Most bike trails are maintained by the Tahoe Utility District and Caltrans, so you are sure to have smooth ground and well defined trails. The official biking season runs from July through November, with maintanence stopping through the winter months. You are typically welcome to travel the paths all year, but at your own risk.

South Lake Tahoe Bike Path

South Lake Tahoe Bike PathThe South Lake Tahoe Bike Path is a paved biking trail which starts near El Dorado Beach and then connects with various trails around the South Lake Tahoe area. This is a great path to start on, as you can access dozens of areas in South Shore from this main artery. This path can be easily accessed from the Tahoe Keys in South Lake Tahoe, and leads through historic Valhalla, Camp Richardson, Taylor Creek, and Kiva Beach. This is a wonderful, easy-going trail that the whole family will enjoy!

Tahoe Rim Trail

Lake Tahoe Biking Tahoe Rim TrailThe Tahoe Rim Trail is one of the most popular and famous trails in all of Lake Tahoe. This is a 150 mile loop follows the mountain ridges around all around the lake. It’s not just for mountain biking. In fact, only about 50% of this is open to mountain biking. It’s also used for horseback riding, hiking, and jogging. The east-side is mostly closed to mountain biking because the Flume Trail runs just below the Tahoe Rim Trail in this area. Sections of this trail is part of the Pacific Crest Trail that extends from Mexico all the way to Canada.

The Flume Trail

Lake Tahoe Biking The Flume TrailLake Tahoe’s premiere mountain biking trail is the Flume Trail. This trail offers spectacular vistas of the lake from directly above the east shore of Lake Tahoe. The trail is said by bike enthusiasts to be fun and easy, with a lot of flatland for beginners. If you only have time for one major Tahoe trail, then the Flume Trail should be your choice. There is no competition for pure beauty and an all around enjoyable ride. After you make the initial climb, you’ll be about 1000 feet above Lake Tahoe where the trail is relatively flat until you make your descent.
